Property carriers

Under FMCSA rules in 49 CFR Part 387, for-hire carriers of general freight in vehicles of 10,001 pounds or more need at least $750,000 in liability coverage. Carriers of oil and of certain hazardous materials need higher amounts, up to $5,000,000 for some hazardous materials. Check the current table in Part 387 for your commodity.

Passenger carriers

For-hire passenger carriers have their own minimums based on seating capacity, with higher amounts for larger vehicles. The same Part 387 sets those figures.

Minimums are a floor

Many brokers and shippers require $1,000,000 in auto liability before they will tender loads, which is above the general freight minimum. Read your broker agreements before choosing a limit.
